Congratulations, Class of 2025

The University of South Carolina Upstate awarded degrees to 583 graduates on the evening of May 8 during its spring 2025 commencement ceremony, marking a celebration of resilience, academic achievement, and global perspective.

Chancellor Bennie L. Harris welcomed students, families, faculty, and special guests with greetings in multiple languages before delivering a powerful message focused on global citizenship and the transformative power of education.

“Today we recognize the perseverance, brilliance, and bold steps you have taken to get here,” Harris said. “While this ceremony marks the culmination of your time on this campus, it is only the beginning of your journey as global citizens.”

The chancellor reflected on USC Upstate’s commitment to international engagement and cultural exchange, noting the university hosts students from more than 29 countries. He emphasized that the value of a USC Upstate degree lies not just in knowledge gained, but in the wisdom acquired through cross-cultural experiences and relationships.

“In today’s interconnected world, diverse perspectives are not just a bonus — they are a necessity,” Harris said. “Whether you are an aspiring engineer, business leader, healthcare provider or educator, understanding the global context of your field opens doors that might otherwise remain closed.”

In his remarks, Harris also acknowledged the many supporters who played a role in helping students reach graduation day. Faculty, staff, family members, and friends were all recognized with standing ovations for their encouragement and mentorship.

Also in attendance were members of the University of South Carolina board of trustees, including chair Thad Westbrook and Hank Jolly, Leah Moody and Reid Sherard; members of the Spartanburg County Commission for Higher Education; and USC Upstate’s cabinet and executive leadership team.

As part of the ceremony, USC Upstate conferred an honorary degree upon William R. Cobb ’74, retired chairman and CEO of JM Smith Corporation. A distinguished alumnus and business leader, Cobb has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to leadership, innovation, and service in Spartanburg and beyond. The honorary degree recognizes his exemplary career and his enduring support of USC Upstate and the broader community.

Following the chancellor’s remarks, Student Government Association Vice President Zachary McQueen, a member of the graduating class, addressed his peers with a tribute to their unique journeys.

“Behind every cap and gown is a story — of perseverance, of sacrifice, and of growth,” McQueen said. “Each of our stories is unique, but all are marked by the idea that a college degree would help to achieve a better future.”

McQueen highlighted several members of the graduating class, from transfer students to early graduates to non-traditional students who balanced full-time jobs and families while pursuing their education.

He also thanked USC Upstate faculty and staff for their lasting impact on students’ lives.

“Everything you have poured into us — your lessons, your guidance, your encouragement — it all sits right in front of you, in caps and gowns, prepared to make you proud,” McQueen said.

The ceremony concluded with a final message from Harris: “The world doesn’t need more people who simply know things. The world needs people who understand — who listen deeply, lead with empathy, and seek out voices different from their own.”
